Supplies

  • Fondant (in various colours like red, pink, and white) or food colouring (red and pink) to colour white fondant

  • Rolling pin

  • Heart-shaped cookie cutters in different sizes

  • Fondant shaping tools (optional)

Prepare Your Workspace

  • Ensure your work surface is clean and dry

  • Dust your surface lightly with cornstarch or powdered sugar to prevent the fondant from sticking

Colour Your Fondant

Fondant can be bought in the colour you need (blue, yellow, pink, red, etc) but, in the off chance your local supply store's inventory only carries white fondant, you can colour it at home by doing the following.

  • Cut out the amount of fondant you need to colour.

  • Select the food colouring colour you want.

  • Spread your fondant out to create a small pocket in the center.

  • Add 1-2 drops of food colouring.

  • Slowly fold the fondant edges inward to seal the food colouring inside. Next, knead and stretch the fondant until the colour has been evenly combined.

  • Continue this process until your desired colour has been achieved.

  • Repeat this process for each colour you will need.

Remember to wear food-safe gloves if you're handling darker colours to prevent staining your hands.

Prepare Fondant for Shaping

Roll out your fondant to an even thickness, about 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick, using a rolling pin. Make sure it's large enough to cut out your desired shapes.

Using either heart-shaped cookie cutters or a fondant knife or toothpick, trace a heart shape out of the rolled fondant. Note: Using a cookie cutter will make it easier to get the necessary shape. If you don't have a heart-shaped cookie cutter at home, you can use a small sharp-tip knife or a toothpick. It'll take a little more time to cut out a heart shape but not impossible.

Pro Tip: To help you get the perfect heart shape, trace a light outline to get the ideal shape you want to cut out.

Positioning your cutting tool about 1cm in you will do a second outline that will help you cut out the inside heart giving you a smaller heart and a bordered heart.

You will repeat this process for your other coloured fondant until you have cut out all your heart toppers.

Depending on the amount of fondant you've used you may have some extra left over in which case you can continue cutting out hearts until you have used it all or you can try making smaller heart shapes using other tools you have available at home or using your hands to free-hand the shapes you want to include.

Wants you have cut, molded, and shaped all your fondant pieces place them on a wax baking sheet and leave them to dry for about 24 hrs. Letting them dry on a wax baking sheet will help you peel them off without breaking if the bottom gets stuck.

Attach your Toppers

Keeping it simple and wanting the fondant toppers to stand out, the icing is a classic vanilla buttercream. Because some of the fondant shapes were white, it's recommended the buttercream be a true cream colour to showcase those white toppers.

Note: Your buttercream doesn't need to be a cream colour if you don't want it to be. Make your buttercream or icing any colour you wish that you feel will best showcase your beautiful hand-made toppers!

When your buttercream is ready, transfer it into a piping bag and using any piping tip you want, cover your cupcakes with a layer of buttercream. Grabbing your fondant toppers begin organizing them in any combination on your cupcakes-let your creativity free! There is no one right way of decorating your cupcakes.

Presto! They are done, and ready for their photo-op!
